T-Mobile Park

아주 옛날 T-Mobile에서 일할 당시 맨날 건의 올렸던 게 MLB 혹은 야구 Sponsorship이었는데 회사도 떠나고 강산이 거의 두 번 바뀔때 쯤 그 당시에 이야기했던 게 현실이 되었다.

그리고 동시에 막연히 이야기했던 “본사가 Mariners 홈구장에서 10분인데 왜 여기 구장 스폰서를 못할까”했던 것도 어느새 이루어져 Safeco Field가 T-Mobile Park으로 바뀐지도 몇 년이 되었다.

암튼… 그간 한번도 방문 못하다가 우연히 애들 ticket이 생기고 해서 drop off해주고 pickup해주러 가는 길에 야구장 앞을 서성인 기회가 있었다…

KGJ가 처음으로 여기 구장을 방문하던 주에 시애틀에 이사 온 게 어여 18년전…. 이제 KGJ는 동상도 만들어졌네…. 🙂 – 오래된 Seattle 야구팬들은 이 구장이 없어질 위기에 있던 MLB팀에 활력을 불어넣어줬던 KGJ가 지어준 거라 믿는다…

This place has connection with my personal histories….

In the old days when I was working for T-Mobile, we always asked the leadership to consider sponsoring baseball or MLB and even asked why not purchasing the naming rights of ‘Safeco Field’ – home of Seattle Mariners which is 10 min drive from T-Mobile US’ HQ.

After almost a two decade, both happened although I left for other business 🙂 and this summer I had the fortune to visit this “T-Mobile Park” to pick up my son and his friends 🙂

Also, near the home plate entrance now there is a statue of KGJ who visited this field for the first time at the week we moved to Seattle 🙂 – and old Seattle baseball fans still believe this new ballpark is a gift from KGJ 🙂

Boston에 왔으니 이건 또 드셔주시고 가야지 않겠냐?

지인의 추천으로 찾아온 Newton에 있는 Steamers Seafood Market…그냥 외형은 해산물 구멍가게인데 맛있게 쪄서 준다…

We have always visited Quincy Market for this but tried out with local recommendation – was tasting great

Boston College

공항 가는 길 나름 생산적으로 보내고 보은도 할 겸 보수동 칼리지에 들렸다…

보수동 칼리지는 우리 큰 분의 가능성을 보시고 용서해 주셨던 고마운 곳… 그리고 한때는 여기로 결정하고 Deposit도 내고 건너올 준비를 하고 있었지만 결국은 그냥 이 기회를 날려버리는걸로 결정하게 되었다

아무튼 하필 이 일대에서 일전에 구경 못해 본 2개 대학들 중 하나라 구경도 하고 후회할거면 후회도 해보자란 심정+부모로써 감사한 ojirap 마음을 전달하기 위해 방문했다..

예상했다시피… 진 to the 짜 훌륭한 대학이다… 학교 캠퍼스나 학생들 및 학교 관계자들 모두 반듯하고 깔끔하고 정말 좋은 인상을 받고 왔다…학교 앞에서 마음속으로 큰절 한번 드리고 왔고 날려버린 Deposit에 후회가 없게 되었다…

As a stop to go back to airport, we stopped and visited Boston College which has a special meaning to me – Thank you again for believing A’s potential. The campus, buildings, town, staffs, and students were beautiful and I was having a hard time to hold myself from bowing my heads down to earth to this institution. Plus, now I don’t have any regrets on the deposit I blew up on here. BC deserves well enough to take my money although it was small 🙂

Drive back to Greater Boston

마지막으로 Cornell다니는 친구 아드님 밥 사드리고 Cornell/Ithaca에서의 알찬 하루를 마친 후 이제는 진짜 집으로 돌아가야 할 시간이 다가왔다. 사실 Ithaca에서 동쪽으로 갈 때 Syracuse를 통해 I-81/I-90으로 가는게 좋은 지 아니면 남동쪽의 local 길을 한참 달린 후 I-88을 통해 동쪽으로 가야할 지 의견들이 분분한데… (어차피 I-88과 I-90은 Albany외곽에서 만남…)

논쟁의 요지는 I-88로 가면 시간은 15-30분 save되고 Toll도 아주 조금 절약 되지만 local을 많이 지나야 하고 Freeway도 첩첩 산중이라 야생동물 출현이 많아 특히 밤에는 좋지 않다…

결론적으로는 출발 직전 잠시 고민하다 “해지기 전까지 Freeway를 탈수 있으면 -장거리를 가야하기 때문에- 조금이라도 빨리 도착하는 길을 가야겠다”하고 과감히 I-88을 향해 달려갔다.. 오후에 폭우도 오는 바람에 길도 아주 살짝 미끄러웠고, 예상 대로 어느 구간에서는 New York State Patrol이 내 뒤를 5분 정도 local길로 따라오고 🙂 (아마 주구장창 speed gun쏘면서 왔을거다….) 무사히 해가 지기 직전에 NY-79, NY-206국도를 주파하고 I-88에 진입하며 어둠속에 첩첩산중을 달리기 시작했다…

중간에 화장실도 한 번 가고 하면서 비록 Mass Pike 구간의 1/3정도는 야간 freeway공사와 사고 복구로 감축된 차선으로 달려야했지만 대략 총 5.5시간에 편안히 주파하고 (Jeep Compass만세!! 🙂 ) Boston외곽의 outer beltway동네에 도착하고 이번 여행의 마지막 밤을 보냈다…

After having a dinner with my buddy’s son who are attending Cornell, we had to leave to east to finish the last major driving of this trip 🙂 There has been lot of questions and debates on which route is better for anyone who needs to go east from Ithaca whether to go with I-81/I-90 via Syracuse after shorter local roads or I-88 after longer drive of local roads – The main point of discussions were the safety -especially at night- and road conditions as two route only have 15-30min difference.

After quick thought, I decided to take I-88 with the idea that it will be okay if I can reach I-88 before the sunset 🙂 and it was a success although the local roads were slightly slippery and had New York State Patrol following me for any opportunity(?) for speeding at local roads 🙂

Anyhow I ended up enjoying the drive in dark in the middle of nowhere/mountains in I-88, and successfully merged into I-90/Thruway at Albany and continued to east via NY Thruway and Mass Pike which was full force construction mode 🙂 -maybe 1/3 of Mass Pike drive was on reduced lanes due to midnight constructions.

I love driving Jeep Compass! 🙂

Driving to Syracuse, NY

털린 영혼과 새빨갛게 타버린 얼굴면상을 한 채로 또 작렬하는 태양빛을 받으며 다음 행선지를 향해 서쪽으로 달려가 Syracuse에서 하루 밤 묶었다… 신기한건 호텔이 무슨 1800년대 건물을 hotel로 renovate한 거라 해서 신기한 마음에 숙박했는데 생각보다 아주 훌륭 (단 바닥이 삐그덕 소리가 나서 -내방뿐만 아니라- 주위 방의 사람들이 돌아다니는 소리가 다 그대로 전달…ㅋㅋ)

저녁은 모르는 동네에서 뭘 먹지하다가 우연히 발견한 Dave’s Hot Chicken을 먹었다.. 역시 한국인으로써 매운 치킨을 한국식 양념을 하지 않은 채로 먹는다는 건 치킨에 대한 모독으로 간주하기로 했다…

After losing soul during the rides and getting sun-burnt on all arms and faces, drove to northwest to Syracuse, NY. (and believe paid countless tolls in Mass Spike and NY Thruway 🙂 )

Happen to find Dave’s hot chicken and it was great although it taught me the lesson that hot chicken without Korean sauce is an insult to hot chicken 😛

The Skyler hotel in Syracuse was a kind of experience of 1800’s old building renovated to hotel 🙂 very comfortable hotel except cracking sounds from the floor 🙂

Alaska 536: Seattle to Boston

예상대로 2주만에 다시 Boston행.. 🙂 동승자 왕복 할인표를 끊기 위해서 2개의 Active 한 itenary를 꾸며야 했다.

  • Seattle-Boston 2인 Round Trip: 6/20 Seattle to Boston + 7/8 Boston to Seattle (동승자 할인 티켓)
  • Boston-Seattle 1인 Round Trip: 6/22 Boston to Seattle + 7/4 Seattle to Boston

그래서 비행기 일정 확인할 때마다/checkin할때 마다 날짜와 itenary를 헷갈리지 않기 위해 은근히 신경이 쓰였다…(게다가 Seattle 출발은 비행기 값과 숙박료를 아끼기 위해 모두다 Red-eye로 하는 바람에 출발일과 도착일이 하루씩 차이도 나서 complexity는 더 레벨업….ㅋㅋ)

그리고 이번 출발(여행 일정상으로는 Boston으로 돌아가는 셈…)은 빈 가방도 부쳐야 하고 이런저런 이유로 공항에 몇 시간전에 빨리 가야하는 바람에… 내 탑승 Terminal에서는 정반대의 Terminal에 있는 Seattle 공항 라운지에서 시간 떼우고 공짜 음식+음료수로 가득 채우고 갔다..ㅎㅎㅎ 🙂

하필 작년 여름에도 가족 여행 차 여기에 왔었기에 Boston이 최근에는 가장 자주 와본 out of town동네가 되어 버렸고 이제는 심지어 Boston Logan Airport도 동선을 꽤기 시작했으며, Mass Pike Freeway는 이제 슬슬 “처음 운전하면서 바짝긴장하게 되는 길”이 아니라 조끔 친숙해 지기 시작했다..

암튼 내 인생 Boston일지의 4회차 시작…

Seattle University

전혀 예상치 않게 우연히 목요일 오후를 Seattle의 Broadway근처에서 보내게 되었다. 뭐 뾰족히 할 일도 없고 앉아서 몇시간을 있기에는 답답해서 점심 먹으러 나온 김에 주위를 산책…그래서 시애틀에 산지 거의 20년만에 처음으로 SU Campus를 찬찬히 걸어보았다.

뭐 예상했다시피 작은 캠퍼스에 필요한 것만 딱딱 갔다놓은 아담한 분위기….특히 지역에서 고교를 졸업한 수험생을 경험한 제3자로써 아쉬운 건 아무래도 도심에 있는 지역중심의 사립이다 보니 야간 혹은 회사들이 지원해주는 대학원 과정 중심으로 너무 치우쳐서 상대적으로 학부 과정을 발전할 기회를 놓친 게 아닌가 하는 아쉬움이 있다…같은 동네 UW Computer Science & Engineering이 특히 지난 10년간 미친듯이 올라간 점 + 같은 기간 동안 UW Bothell이 성장해온 것을 보면 이 학교는 뭘 했을까 하는 동네 주민으로 서의 아쉬움이 느껴진다…

조금 과장을 붙이자면 모르는 사람은 없지만 좋아하는 사람은 많지 않은 학교의 어려움이 느껴진다…. (물론 뭔 사연이었는지 우리 큰 분한테 -이미 지원시한이 지났음에도- 계속해서 love call을 보내준 건 감사하게 생각한다 🙂 )

Downtown Core의 접근성은 UW보다도 더 훌륭한데 그게 역설적으로 발목을 잡은 게 아닌가 하는 아쉬움…Catholic Jesuit소속의 사립이지만 사실 그러기에는 또 다른 Catholic학교보다도 사립으로서의 특색도 약하고…

돌아다니다 보니 우리 회사 Alfa 딜러매장도 보인다… – 여기 자동차 딜러가 있다는 건 알았지만 그게 우리 회사차였는지는 처음 알게됨…ㅋㅋㅋ

Wondered around Seattle U’s campus for the first time in my almost two decades of life at Seattle 🙂 cozy and nice campus but – as a parent who went thru crazy college application process – I wondered where this school has been during the crazy growth of UW and UW Bothell in last decade.

Maybe their lucrative environment -closest to downtown core and ability to target lots of part time post graduate students – might have produced relatively less focus on undergraduate programs.

Boston Underground Tunnels

Tunnel이 많은건 인정한다만 터널마다 막히는건 어쩔것인가? 잘모르는 동네에서 외길 터널을 찾아 건너 가는건 참 어려운 일이다.

Had no idea on how to get back to airport from downtown so had to follow the navigation which doesn’t tell the lane level changes. Thank you Boston drivera for letting stupid unfamiliar bdrivers like me to cut thru at last min

Back to the city

쉽게 떠나지 못하고 결국 작은분 선풍기 사들고 다시  Lenox에 들려 drop하고 거진  full로 Mass Pike를 달려공항으로…

폭염으로 100도는 우습게 찍어대는 와중에 freeway에선 대형 사고가 나서 30분쯤 서있다가 갔다…덥고 졸리고 화장실 가고 싶고의 삼중고를 버티다 그리고 휴게소에선 나름 스타벅스의 고장에선 볼 수없는 향토 식품인 던킨 커피 한잔….

At the end, my original plan of lazy morning at Speingfield failed after getting outcrying text request from son for table fan. 🙂 so drove all the way back to Tanglewood after picking up one fan then finally drove back to Boston.
