Fort Lewis / JBLM

흔하지 않은 귀한 초대를 받아 지난달말에 Fort Lewis JBLM 군부대 안으로 방문할 기회를 맞았다.. 항상 차로 freeway 지나만 가면서 저 안에는 어떨까 궁금했는데 (한참 미군의 파병이 많던 시절엔 이 부대 지역 고속도로위를 가로지르는 고가에 가득한 노란 손수건이 항상 인상적이었다..) – Seattle에서 남쪽으로 내려가면 Tacoma 도심이 끝나갈때 쯤 나오는데 규모가 어마어마 하다…

뭐 실리적으로는 사실.. I-5가 매번 여기부터 길이 막힌다.. 특히 상행선을 타면..ㅋㅋ 그리고 확장공사를 거의 강산이 한번 바뀔정도의 기간에 걸쳐 여전히 하고 있다.. 그래서인지 항상 저 안에 무엇이 있길래 그럴까 생각만 항상 증폭…ㅎㅎ

그러고 보면 90년대에 한 주말 카투사 지인 따라 들어가서 구경해본 용산 Garrison 이후로 미군 부대 방문은 처음인듯…

Whenever going south from Seattle or coming back from south, I always wondered why I-5 always backs up from JBLM, when in the world we will see this decade long I-5 expansion finished… Also, on the same freeway around the base, I encountered the flying (actually landing) aircraft closest ever to me in my life (thought it was landing over my car) while driving I-5 once, and also remember lots of yellow scarfs on the freeway overpass at base – all made me wonder what is actually in inside of these military bases (actually joint base between Army and Air Force – so two bases)

Well, this one big question solved luckily from one invite from family residing in the base at the last part of summer 🙂 so this was my first US military base/garrison visit after Yongsan/Seoul garrison weekend visit during 90s 🙂

Ballad and Freemont

지난달 기념일에 우리 사장님과 오랜만에 힙한곳 찾아가기 시도하러 간 Ballard와 Freemont.. 시애틀 안이라 돈내고 주차하고 젊은이들 저녁먹으러 오는 -털썩 나도 늙었네- 신기한곳으로 찾아가 이름 올리고 기다려서 굴+올리브+빵 사먹는 호사(?)를 하고 왔다….때마침 집에 오는길에 똑딱다리도 올라가주시고..ㅎㅎ (아재는 밤에 라면 하나 더 끓여먹었다능..ㅎㅎ)

Took a hip dinner to Ballard & Freemont for ‘flex & casual’ dining (actually Seattlite’s young & hip dinner 🙂 ) which is becoming more and more ‘experience’ for “getting older” folks like me… Oyster+Olive+Bread 🙂

The Field’s Park at Portland

The last stop – Portland’s Park.. Leap of Driving after this stop+dinner concluded this Spring road trip.

마지막 방문지 포틀랜드.. 사실 Seattle도 protest로 유명했지만 여기가 진짜 성지… (트럼프 시절 ‘민주당 주지사들이 있는 주는 똑바로 운영을 못해서 무정부주의자들의 난리친다라고 비난하면서 우리동네와 싸잡아 같이 지적질(?) 당한 동네인데..) 아직도 Portland시내에는 여전히 Protest가 일어나고 한편 protest가 결국은 폭력시위로 변하게 되어 도시가 많이 어두워져 이제는 편한 공원들이 가족데리고 쉴공원이 시내에 많이 없어졌다고들 한다… 뭐든 콜롬비아강을 건너 오레곤에 오면 더 강해지는 건지도…

I-5 in Oregon

근 10년전 로드 트립처럼 완주는 아니였지만…(밑에 몇부분은 안찍었으니…) 이번 여행동안 I-5 Oregon구간도 다 지나왔다..

Covered most of I-5 in Oregon as well from Grant Pass to Portland with stops at Grant Pass, Winston, Eugene, Woodburn, and Portland – Loved no Sales tax on receipts! 🙂

Olympia & State Capital Campus

First time being inside of Olympia, state’s capital city, after being a Washington residence from 2007.

뭐 항상 I-5 Freeway로 지나가면서 주청사 상투꼭대기만 보다가 Washington으로 이주하고 13년만에 처음으로 주청사를 가봤다.. 고로 US-101 양 끝단점을 다 가본셈이 되었다!!!!

Samish Bay – Taylor Shellfish Farms

보통 1-2년에 한번은 미친듯이 석화 먹는날을 가진다…뭐 돈 벌어야한다는 건 이해가 간다만 옛날처럼 굴을 사서 자유롭게 그 옆에서 구워먹고 까먹게 하던 시스템이 좋았다란 생각만 가득이다..

Annual or Bi-annual crazy oyster eating day..

Well I do understand, the farm needs to run the business for profit purpose, but I do miss the old days when everyone was welcome to do the charcoal grill and freely eat at open tables next to the shop. (Now, those tables are closed ‘restaurant table’ area and you cannot do the grilling at all)

Milkie Milkie Bingsu Cafe at Edmonds – The Last Dessert Before Corona Shutdown

Happen to visit here at last Saturday after grocery shopping (well it is more of restocking) and this dessert end up being the last dessert we had at café (with ‘very distancing’ in the store) for foreseeable future period. -Just a day before governor’s order of restaurant shutdown.

Nice Bingsu with fine & crispy ice but their ice was not milk based, so I wondered why they are calling themselves as Milkie Milke

As US never opens up any infection source details of confirmed cases on Corona -only the numbers of confirmed cases and deaths by county with news of random people getting confirmations, I found myself feeling more nervous on being outside. Especially noticing the continued growth of confirmed case numbers (now Washington state just passed 1k) Now, I think the dessert I had at last weekend seems crazier & stupid idea than few days ago..

Also, after almost-two-weeks of ‘stuck at home’, staying at home feels more comfortable as fear of being outside becomes bigger than the challenges of ‘stuck at home’

Maybe this pandemic might end up creating lots of new 2020 Otakus who will refuse to get outside and stay at home with repetition of work & sleep after all things are settled.. (and I might be already one of those.. 🙂 )

결국 당분간의 마지막이 된 ‘가게에 앉아 먹는’ 디저트 (이제는 주정부에서 모든 음식점을 takeout 만 하게금 폐쇄해서 더이상 이렇게 앉아 먹는 ‘호사’는 당분간 불가능..)

우유 빙수도 아니면서 왜 밀키밀키지?

한편, 미국에서는 확진자에 대한 감염 관련 정보를 전혀 공개하지 않고 county별 확진자 사망자 수만 발표하는 관계로 점점 증가하는 수자를 보며 (오늘부로 Washington 주 1000명 돌파…) 진짜로 이젠 어디서 어떻게 걸릴수도 있다는 생각에 밖에 나가기가 무서워진다. 한편, 지금 보면 이렇게 주말에 먹은것도 진짜 간이 부은/미친 행동이 아닐까란 생각까지 든다…

이제는 슬슬 나가는것에 대한 공포가 집안에만 있는 따분함 보다 더 커지니 집에 있는게 마음이 더 편해진다..ㅡ.ㅡ;  이번 대공황은 결국 같은 방에서 자다 일하다만 하고 사회생활을 거부하는 2020형 오타쿠를 많이 양산하겠다는 생각도 들고 나도 그중 하나가 되어가는 느낌이다…

Mrs. Doubtfire Musical at 5th Ave Theatre

Had a nice time at 5th Ave Theatre with Mrs. Doubtfire at the last day of 2019. -Also, surprised to learn this Seattle performance is world premiere & pre-Broadway tryout before it goes to officially to Broadway in the Spring. Oh Dear… 🙂

옛날 로빈 윌리엄스의  인생작 영화 중 하나였던 Mrs. Doubtfire. 뮤지컬로 재탄생해서 관람해주셨는데 자세히 보니 이게 이번에 Seattle에서 세계최초 & 시범 공연이란다.. (올봄 브로드웨이에서 시작할 예정)
