언제 기회되면 호텔 숙소 길건너였던 Trailblazers 경기한번 보러와야겠다는 생각도 잠깐들었다…(호텔에서 체크아웃한날이 아마 Raptors 경기였는지 심지어 BC에서 내려온 차들이 주차장 한가득이었다..)
Had a quick 1 night visit to our southern neighborhood – Portland. However, something new at this time was actually this was my first visit and stay near the city center.

연말에 지칠대로 지쳐서 아랫동네로 산보 갔다가.. 뭐 볼거 있나 싶어서 찾던 중 하필 유명한 수도원인 The Grotto가 25일날은 쉬는 바람에 여기가 신기해서 크리스마스날 밤 행차를 했다.
대략 1920년대부터 자발적으로 시작되었다는 한 골목의 쑈가 이제는 미국 역사의 현장이 되었단다. (U.S. National Register of Historic Places에 등재되었다함…)
사실 이거 엄청난 수고에 창작의 고통도 가져오고 장식 도구 값도 어마어마할 듯하고 매해 설치+철거+1년에 한달을 위해 보관하려고 고생도 할것이며 매해 겨울마다 전기값은 어떨런지… 100% 자원이란는데…. 한편 길에 넘쳐나는 사람들과 통과하려는 차로 인해 거의 한달간 집에 privacy도 없을듯 싶어 속된말로 ‘약빨고’ 집장식하신 분들에게 진짜 존경을 표하는 바이다.. 🙂 이게 한편으로는 UGC의 힘인가 싶기도 하고…
(사실 몇년전까지도 Seattle Metro에도 비슷하게 유명한 골목하나가 있긴했는데 그 골목의 리더격인 집주인이 몇 년전 올해가 마지막이라고 선언한뒤 사라졌음)
Voluntary decorations of the houses with holiday lights in one block of street. The most amazing thing is the fact this street is 100% voluntarily and giving up the privacy with high traffic of cars and foots and nobody provides any support. (and this street is now registered as US Historic Places)

몇년전에 Utah로 놀러 갈때에도 갔던 길이지만 겨울에는 처음이고 이 구간은 -특히 오레곤쪽은- 모두 고산 지역의 고속도로라 눈길의 위험이 항상 도사리고 있는곳… 사실 이 길이 제일 날씨에 변동이 많은 길이고.. 돌아갈길이 마땅치 않은 구간이라 여기를 최대한 눈이 오지 않을때 지나가야하는 관계로 일정설계에 머리아프게 했던 구간..ㅎㅎ
둘째날 제대로 길에 올라타주셨다.. Kennewick에서 출발해서 Oregon을 북동쪽으로 관통한 이후 Idaho에 와서 Twin Falls까지 가주는 여정.. Micron으로 유명한 Boise에 들려서 점심도 먹고…열심히 달렸다.,ㅎㅎ
This -from Southeastern WA to Southern Idaho via Northeast Oregon was the most critical point for deciding the timing of travel -thanks to their elevation & snow activity- all safely passed without any snow – magically 🙂

그동안 오래토록 집콕하다가 백신도 맞고 정신건강 회복 차원에서 아이들 Spring Break기간을 맞이하여 오랜만에 운전대 한번 제대로 잡아주셨다.. 북서쪽 외퉁수 마을에 사는데 담장 넘어 북쪽인 영국령 콜롬비아로 못가니 그동안 가보고는 싶지만 엄두를 못냈던 남쪽 미국령 콜롬비아를 탐방하기로 하고 제대로 달려주셨다.
차에서 내릴때마다 어디를 갈때 마다 항상 마스크 써야하는걸 remind해야해서 느낌이 많이 다르긴 했지만 뭐 이제 이건 앞으로의 standard라 편하게 생각하기로 마음을 잡아먹고 움직였다..
Back to the driving wheel in a while – after long no-travel + stay at home plus vaccination period. Still have to remind myself and families to wear masks and check the restaurants/stores status during the travel but this might be the new norm going forward..
As villager living at the northwest corner of the town and not allowed to go over the borderline of British Columbia, decided to take an expedition of ‘American Columbia’ 🙂

Embarked a trip to Oregon to hunt for a “hard to find” Bosch Dishwasher at Washington
– There was no ideal dishwasher within our budget in Washington – only found out Sears outlet at Portland and Best Buy at Beaverton has it…
– Wondered for 1 hour during midnight to attempt or not and decided to check it out by going there: risk was returnning without any gains after hours of driving back and forth.
– Extra cost: $50-$60 Fuel+car mileage dep. plus some time and effort to drive for round trip for unknown results. (but my time is cheap). Also this means I have to haul-away the old one by myself since it is outside of “delivery & pickup”range. Also, I cannot get installation service or need to hire someone to get installed. (Thank you youtube!!…)
– Savings: $250 from buying an open box- though it has little dent, about $100 for “forced” DIY Installation – because of the reaon stated above, also around some savings for sales tax (Thank you state of Oregon!)
Extra gain is seeing/bypassing Nike’s HQ.. 🙂 hearing quite dishwasher running after 7 hours of round trip driving and 1 hour of uninstall & install DIY – priceless..

Oregon의 땅끝마을 Astoria..
나름 공부했던 미국사의 한장면이 나오는 동네이기도 하다..
일명 서부 대탐방 Lewis Clark Trail의 마지막점인데.. 즉.. Lousiana Purchase를 하고 나서 당최 무엇이 있는지 아무것도 모르는 상태에서 대통령이 명령을 내려, 두 친구 Lewis와 Clark이 Missouri 강을 따라 계속 서진하여 죽을 고비를 넘기며 산맥을 넘어 결국은 Columbia강을 만나 태평양에 왔다가 여기를 찍고 돌아갔다라는 역사인데.. 어떻게 보면 서부 개척의 시작인 동시에 원주민과의 애증의 역사의 시작점 인듯…
여기 Column에 오니 경치가 끝내준다…
그리고 여긴 Canada에서 시작해 Washington 중부를 관통하고 내려와 Washington과 Oregon의 경계를 이루는 Columbia강이 태평양과 만나는 곳..
Lewis Clark Trail에 대한건 예전에 Missourri에 갔을 때도 봤었는데 여기서도 보이네.. 참 이 나라는 땅이 넓다보니 누군가가 목적을 가지고 다니는 길이 가지가지 Trail혹은 Expedition Trail들로 남는군..
