Old Note from Orientation Day at Business School

Happen to found an old note I took during MBA orientation session back in Ann Arbor like 15 years ago, while cleaning up the shelf.. – This note even has a coffee cup mark 🙂

I don’t even recall what the professor’s name was (because I recall he was mentioning he is moving to Tuck school after the orientation session) but this notes stroke me for a min. especially the first line of “Live a dream”

Making me think maybe the most important thing at business school is already learned at orientation days

이사준비 과정에서 짐정리하는 와중에 발견한 MBA Orientation Session note – 15년전으로 타임머신을 타고 돌아갔다왔다..기억으로는 이건 전체 session이 아니고 개별 section session이었는데 하필 다른 학교로 떠나는 교수님이 마지막 일로 진행하는 session – 지금도 -교수님 성함도 기억안나는게 안타깝긴하지만- 이 수업에 왜인지 모를 울림이 아직도 생생했는데 Dream으로 시작해서 그랬나보다..

결국 나에게는 모든게 고난의 행군 여정이었던 MBA 과정 – 어여 강산이 한번 반이 바뀌었지만, 기억에 남는건 이런거 구나 싶기도 하고 이때 꿈꿨던 모습으로 살고 있는지 궁금하다.

노트 한가운데 떡하니 있는 Coffee Mark에 진한 커피한잔이 땡겨 쭈욱들이키며 다시 읽어보았다..ㅎㅎ

Cafe Du Monde

가본적은 없는 Lousiana의 유명한 Coffee인데 캔 디자인도 복고풍이고 해서 사봤음…진한 French Blend맛 – 맛은 강하고 좋은데 우유를 타 먹는거라 recommend하지만 본인의 문제로 우유는 못타먹음.. 한번 시도했다가 바로 직행…T_T

비싸지만 않으면 항상 사먹을텐데 하는 아쉬움이다..ㅎㅎ

Great drip coffee just picked it up because of old style can design but it worked/tasted great!! (although I could not follow the recommendation at the can – drinking this as  Cafe au lait – due to my personal issue…- tried once and that thing happened )   🙂

Selling Sunset: Season 2

Another interesting time/data burner from Netflix landed season 2 and finished it… Actually, picked up its first series last year with the interesting comment that this is Girls next door+ House Hunter + Legally Blonde + Office :).

Anyhow story is an real estate brokerage/agency boutique firm in LA – selling expensive/upscale homes for celebs and rich clients and all the agents are ex-models or have model-like look. and yes there are in-office battles and personal issue struggles as well as fancy homes + great music selections during the course of show 🙂

Maybe one of the Netflix originals with the most ‘Entertainment’ value 🙂

작년에 회사에서 사람들과 이야기하다 Netflix에서 아주 시간 떼우기 좋은 골때리는 시리즈가 나왔다며 추천(?) 받았던 Selling Sunset – Season 2가 나와서 정주행해주셨다..ㅎㅎㅎ 요인즉슨, 전직 할리우드 모델 출신 혹은 그에 준하는 급의 비주얼 가진 에이전트들이 고급 주택을 최상류층 고객들에게 중개하는 부동산 부띠크의 이야기.. 이들은 서로 편가르고 싸우기도 하고 각자의 개인적인 문제로 골머리를 썩다가도 중개를 위해 열심히들 뛰어다닌다.. 물론 정확히 표현은 어렵지만 -미국의 돈많고 화려하지만 머리가 좀 비어있는 금발 여자들의 생활태도/방식/세계관도 보여준다…- 그나저나 나오는 집들의 영상미 그리고 쇼의 전반에 깔려있는 음악들이 끝내주심… (햐 이런집들이…ㅎㅎ)

(고로 난 절.대.로 경험할수 없는 미국 문화의 한 단면을 보여주는 동시에 상술한 다양한 이유로 entertainment value가 절대적으로 높은 시리즈..ㅎㅎ)

Rocketman

예전에 Bohemian Rhapsody보러 갔을때 예고편을 봐서 내용을 대충 알고 있던 관계, Elton John도 훌륭한 musician이지만 스타일이 너무 정해져있지 않나란 생각, 그리고 Bohemian Rhapsody는 PG-13인데 반해 이 영화는 R등급.. (대충 내용이 어떨지 상상이 되어..) 등등의 정보로 내용을 충분히 예상할 수 있어서 skip했던 Rocketman – Amazon Prime video에 풀려서 감상했다..

내용이 좀 어두운거(관종+약) 빼놓으면 좋은 음악+화려한 영상 많이 나오는 뮤지컬 하나 본 느낌… Iowa에서 보낸 1년 대학생활때 엄청나게 들었던 Elton John 노래를 다시 듣는 느낌.. (Elton John이 학교 Arena에서 공연해서 온동네 라디오들이 거의 공연일 앞뒤로 한달씩 Elton John노래만 틀어댔음..ㅎ)

아쉬운건 내 Elton John 최애곡인 Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me를 George Michael과 부르는 장면 하나 재현했음 했는데…. 그 공연 듀엣은 안나왔어도 노래는 나왔으니 뭐 만족..

Nice catchup of one of the missed movie via Amazon Prime Video. Felt like a musical performance (although the story was a bit gloomy) Reminded me the old days in Iowa where all the radio stations played Elton John’s music for a month upon his visit to Ames where I was residing 🙂

(At then, there was no bigger area/event place in Des Moines than the arena in Ames, so every event happening in central Iowa was happening at Ames..)

The Vietnam War: A Film by Ken Burns & Lynn Novick

Another mid blowing series from Netflix- if you are history nerd or documentary nerd, 🙂 this is a must-see series. Long story with 10 episodes but nothing was boring at all, and this simple series can be better than whatever text book on Vietnam War.

우와 이거 Netflix의 최고의 명작중 하나..

시리즈가 너무 길어서 섣불리 시작못하던 시리즈였지만 그래도 가더 서다를 반복하며 결국 완주했다. 역사 Documentary의 거장 감독이 작정하고 만든 교과서급 작품…

월남전은 교과서에서 ‘우리도 저러면 안된다’라는 뉴앙스로 배운 ‘월남 패망’, 한동안 이슈였던 고엽제 후유증 문제, 쌀국수 Pho의 세계화 계기 정도의 단편적인 지식만 가지고 있었는데 .. 이 시리즈는 시작 이전부터 모든 과정에서 발생하는 미국/베트남/국제정치 사건들을 자세히 각측의 시각에서 서술해 나간다..

결론은 이 전쟁만큼 이런저런 일들이 사방에서 동시다발 발생한건 없는 듯 싶고, 당사자인 미국이나 베트남은 당연하겠지만 세계사적으로도 가장 큰 영향을 끼친 단일 사건이 베트남 전쟁이 아닐까 싶다..

Shelter’s Jay

오 이 잘생긴 새…. 여지껏 Blue Jay인줄 알았는데 알고보니 Blue Jay는 이 동네에 살지 않고 이 녀석은 얼굴이 까매서 뭘까하고 찾아봤더니 그 사촌 쯤 되는 Shelter’s Jay이구나

근데 이 새 이름이 한글로는 “어치”라고? 참 fishy한 이름은 가진 새…구나..ㅎㅎㅎ

I have always thought this was a Blue Jay and found out Blue Jay actually doesn’t live in western part of this continent.. and learned this guy’s name being Shelter’s Jay

Chick-Fil-A To-Go

Chick-Fil-A To go pickup – store is still crowded with drive thru although dining hall is closed. (you tell the staff at the door -blocked by table- then they hand it to you at the door.)

This was a totally opposite to the case I picked up the day before at local Thai restaurant (which is the hot spot for walking traffic form T-Mobile & I used to eat at there a lot) Store was dark not many to go orders and I could see the pain of survival in the restaurant’s staff’s face..

Sadly, this Stay At Home Order is impacting restaurants totally different ways – if store is driven by car traffic, looks like it is relatively holiding okay, but if the store is dependent on nearby foot/walking traffic, this must be a nightmare..

어제 점심은 Chick Fil A에서.. pickup (Doordash로 해도되긴하는데 그래도 … 직접하는게 좋을듯해서…) 가게 문앞을 Table로 막고 online으로 주문한걸 pickup해가는 방식.. 물론 Drive Thru는 여전히 엄청나게 줄이 길다..

사실 어제는 동네 Thai집에서 pickup해서 먹었는데 (여긴 주고객이 T-mobile직원임..나도 옛날에 애용하던 가게…) 픽업하러가서 한적한 식당과 우울한 표정의 가게 직원을 보니 마음 한편이 짠했는데 Chick Fil A는 (물론 홀에는 사람이 없지만.. ) Drive Thru 여전히 꽉차있다…

Stay At Home Order는 사람들이 차로 가는 가게는 상대적으로 타격이 적은데 비해..아무래도 걸어 가는 가게는 타격이 어마어마한듯하다…

The Pharmacist

허접하게 돈으로 좌우되는 미국 의약 시스템, 심각한 약 문제를 정말 평범한 -한편 동시에 피해자이기도 한 – 약사 한명이 풀어 해치는 이야기.. (본인도 아들이 약사러 갔다가 살해되는 비극을 격음..)

소설같지만 이게 사실이다…Netflix에서 꼭봐야할 하나의 명작..

Another great story/documentary from Netflix. At the end, a small town pharmacist’s passion tears down huge broken medical industry-wise system and greedy businesses around it. Felt sorry about his loss and salute to his passion.

Hard to believe but this is a non-fiction…
